Chromebook update expiry: compare the exact Acer 314 model code

Two Acer Chromebook 314 generations have different published update dates. Read the model code and Google’s current table before valuing a used or discounted device.

1. A new purchase does not restart the update clock

Google says ChromeOS devices receive updates for 10 years from the platform release date. That is not 10 years from the day an Australian buyer purchases a discounted or second-hand Chromebook. A sealed box or a recent seller invoice therefore does not by itself establish the remaining update period. The exact model’s published automatic-update entry is the useful starting point.

This guide compares two actual Acer Chromebook 314 entries in Google’s table, checked on 29 October 2026. It does not compare current Australian offers or claim that every Chromebook with the same screen size has the same support end date. Photographs show older real Chromebooks and keyboard layouts; they illustrate why a family label is insufficient, rather than depicting the two current table rows.

2. Match the whole code, not just Chromebook 314

The CB314-3H / CB314-3HT family, also listed with C934 / C934T codes, has automatic updates listed until June 2031. The CB314-4H / CB314-4HT entry is listed until June 2033. Those two published months are 2 years apart. The extra “4” in the second model code is not a cosmetic detail when matching the support record.

Ask for the complete device model from the seller and verify it against the manufacturer’s identification information and Google’s current entry. Do not assume that a photograph of a familiar Acer shell proves the platform code. Likewise, a listing headed only “Acer 314” is incomplete for this particular support comparison.

3. Preserve the table’s conditions and asterisks

Google marks some older devices with an asterisk. The policy explains that these require opting into extended updates, and warns that some features and services may not be supported for pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates. Do not silently omit an asterisk when quoting a different model’s date, or promise that its extended support has identical features to its original support period.

The two Acer 314 entries compared here are not marked with that asterisk in the observed table. That observation does not remove the need to recheck the exact entry before purchase. The current table, any linked extended-update conditions and the actual device identity belong together. We do not invent a specific final day from a table that supplies only a month and year.

4. Update expiry is a support question, not a physical failure date

A published update end month does not mean the laptop’s hinges, keyboard or battery immediately stop working. It does mean the automatic-update commitment needs to be understood separately from a seller’s hardware warranty. A replacement battery cannot restart the platform’s software support clock, and an extra retailer warranty is not the same thing as Google extending updates.

For a school-managed or work-managed purchase, obtain the organisation’s actual operating-system and management requirements before valuing either device. A model with a later table entry can still fail a particular software or assessment requirement. Conversely, comparing only processor speed can overlook a support period that matters more to the intended deployment. This article does not certify either model for a particular institution.

5. Decide whether the offered unit is sufficiently identified

The CB314-4H family has the later documented end month of these two groups. That is a concrete advantage when the two otherwise suitable offers are being compared for support runway. It is not enough to declare it better value without the complete AUD prices, condition, memory, storage, battery assessment and supplied charger for the actual offered units. Those current offers have not been verified here.

Before paying, retain the exact model code, the matching table entry and observation date, the seller’s condition description, and the return and warranty terms. If the seller cannot identify the model beyond “Chromebook 314”, treat the support horizon as unconfirmed. The practical answer is to resolve that identity first, rather than pricing an assumed ten years of future updates into an incomplete listing.
